This is indeed a very worthy cause as the charity encourages the idea of 'Development' by sponsoring an animal like a pig to a family in a developing country. This livestock programme helps families begin the road to self sufficiency. A pig is particularly useful as a good pig can have up to 20 piglets a year . Pigs also consume waste and provide protein rich meat to help improve a families diet.By sponsoring this gift students learn the true meaning of educating for change. |

 | On Saturday 7th November six students took part in a science competition organised by the Cork Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Boston Scientific. They brought forward two entries, one entitled ‘Working to the Rhythm’ and the other ‘Miracle Water’.
The students had been working furiously with their teacher Ms Dinneen for the last number of weeks carrying out experiments and research on their projects. ‘Working to the Rhythm’ completed by David Harrington, David Hurley and Liam O’Donovan was based on the effects of music when studying. They carried out questionnaires on the junior and leaving certificates to ascertain a profile on how students study. They then carried out a class experiment by playing different types of music to students in the background while they were completing verbal reasoning tasks. They repeated the experiment with no music in the background to compare the difference if any. Their results showed that pop music had the most detrimental effect on studying with the overall grades dropping quite substantially. The students concluded that on the whole it is better to work in silence but if you have to work to music study to classical music because it showed the least difference in test results.
The second group comprising of Stephen Bennett, Patrick Connolly and Aaron O’Donoghue worked on ‘Miracle Water’ . Here the students gathered four different water samples, Bandon tap water, Bandon river water, local well water and a bottled water to test their effect on growth on plants. They also analysed the chemical composition of the water samples. Their results showed that the plants watered by the well water grew the best and the plants watered by the bottled water grew the least! Bandon tap water came a very close second indicating a good source of nutrients for the plants.
On the day both groups were under a lot of pressure as there was some stiff competition from other schools. But to our delight ‘Working to the Rhythm’ won first place! ‘Miracle Water’ then got named for the highest commendation. There was great delight and excitement at the announcement as all the hard work had paid off.
