St Brogan’s Green School

“Green Schools” is an environmental programme organised by An Taisce for Irish schools. It encourages schools to take part in and become aware of environmental issues facing the world today.  The programme is divided into a number of parts including, reusing and recycling, energy, water and transport.

At St Brogan’s we are proud to have been awarded out green flag for “Recycling and Reusing” in May 2007. We were the first secondary school in Bandon to achieve this award. Students in the school work hard to separate and send for recycling, cans, plastic bottles, ink cartridges and paper.  Old batteries and mobile phones are also collected for recycling. Phase two of green schools “Energy” was awarded to the school in May 2009. Students in the school raised awareness on saving costs on ESB, lighting, heating and gas bills.

Students are now working on the third phase of the green flag, Water. At present students are working on reducing the water costs in the school. New flushing systems and push taps have been installed in the school to reduce costs. All students are vigilant to report and leaks or faulty taps to the caretaker as this can waste a lot of water. Students are also planning a visit to the water treatment plant in Inniscarra to see first-hand how water is treated and cleaned for reuse. We have also installed a number of water saving devices in the school, these include, temperature sensitive push taps, new flush systems and a sensor urinal control system in the boys toilets. We hope that these measures will reduce our overall water bill in the school. We also want to raise awareness of the need to save water in our homes as well. Hopefully the school will be awarded its third green flag in May2011.

The next phase of the programme is to work on transport and traffic travelling to and from the school.       BY  GREEN SCHOOL COMMITTE
